In 1973 a cargo plane was flying towards the military base in Keflavík when they started to have some problems and in the end, had to make an emergency landing on the black sand beach at Sólheimasandur, the crew was ok.
At the time the plane was already an old one so they took what they could use and left the wreck on the black sand beach. For many years the plane wreck was the home of a Raven family where the cockpit was a perfect place for the nest. At some point, the plane wreck got attention and is today one of the main attractions in south Iceland.
Justin Bieber filmed a part of his music video for the song I’ll Show You by the plane wreck and the Bollywood song Gerua by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was also filmed by the plane wreck.
You drive along the main road towards the east for about 40 kilometres, there is parking on your right-hand side by the main road.
There is a long walk to the plain wreak, one-way distance is about 4 kilometres so both ways about 8 kilometres and you have to estimate up to 3 hours for the walk and the plane visit. The company Arcanum is offering shuttle tours by bus to the plane wreck. Something you should consider if you like to safe time and especially if the weather is not too good. There is parking by the main road. Make sure to have all your warm and waterproof clothes on.
